5 Signs Your Shock Absorbers Are Done — And Why You Shouldn’t Wait

Shock absorbers don’t fail dramatically. They fade slowly — and most drivers adapt to the decline without realising it. By the time the car is visibly suffering, the damage has often spread beyond the shocks themselves.

Here are five signs that your shocks are telling you something. Learn to hear them early.

1. The Car Bounces More Than Once After a Bump

Push down hard on the front or rear corner of your car and release. A healthy shock will settle the car in one motion. If it bounces two or three times, the shock is no longer doing its job. This is the most reliable DIY test you can run in a car park.

2. The Steering Feels Vague or Loose at Speed

Worn shocks allow the tyres to lose consistent road contact. At highway speeds on the Accra–Kumasi road or over Tema Motorway undulations, this translates to a steering wheel that feels less responsive, even slightly wobbly. This is not just discomfort — it is a handling safety issue.

3. You’re Braking Later Than You Used To

Worn shocks increase stopping distance by up to 20%. Your brakes may be perfect, but if your wheels aren’t maintaining firm road contact, your stopping distance grows. If you’ve noticed you’re pressing harder or earlier — check the shocks, not just the brake pads.

4. Uneven Tyre Wear

Look at your front tyres. If the wear pattern is patchy — worn in some places but not others — that is a classic sign of a shock that’s allowing the tyre to bounce off the road rather than stay in contact with it. Correcting the shock saves the tyre too.

5. Oil or Fluid Leaking from the Shock Body

Run your finger along the length of the shock absorber body. If it’s greasy or visibly wet, the internal seal has failed. A leaking shock is a dead shock — it is no longer providing any resistance. Replace it immediately.

“Most shock absorbers in Ghana are running on borrowed time — not because the roads are bad, but because the signs of failure are easy to ignore. Until the part fails completely. Then they’re impossible to ignore.”
